La Marche Pour Gaza : Récit d’une aventure mémorable

Nous venons de rentrer du Caire. Le gouvernement égyptien a interdit aux 1360 internationaux de rentrer à Gaza pour manifester leur soutien aux Gazaouis et pour dire NON au blocus. Mais ce faisant, il a nous a amené à créer, à partir de la capitale égyptienne, une situation qui a permis de soutenir de manière encore plus spectaculaire le peuple palestinien.

Ce bilan, ce sont nos amis Gazaouis, qui l’ont rapidement tiré, en nous envoyant des messages de remerciements et de félicitations pour avoir mené des actions au retentissement mondial, concernant le siège qui leur est imposé, et ceux qui en portent la lourde responsabilité. “Les actions spectaculaires et très médiatisées que vous menez actuellement au Caire sont bien plus efficaces pour nous que la visite programmée de la bande de Gaza”, nous ont affirmé les organisateurs palestiniens de la Gaza Freedom March.
Récit des faits :

Dès notre arrivée au Caire le 26 décembre, notre groupe de 300 participants français apprenait que le gouvernement égyptien interdisait aux organisateurs américains de la marche de se réunir le lendemain au Collège des Jésuites de la Sainte Famille, afin de permettre aux quelque 800 internationaux de divers pays de faire le point sur la situation. Le même jour, il leur était annoncé que les autocars dans lesquels ils comptaient monter le 28 au matin ne seraient pas au rendez-vous. Nous apprenions également que toutes les personnes, arrivées plus tôt et ayant essayé de se rendre par leurs propres moyens (seuls ou en petits groupes) en direction de Gaza, avaient été arrêtées et se trouvaient bloquées par les forces de l’ordre égyptiennes sur la route, dans leurs hotels ou dans les gares routières. (A noter, que parallèlement, nos amis de la caravane “Viva Palestina”, conduite par George Galloway étaient également bloqués par le gouvernement égyptien)

Et le dimanche 27 décembre, un an jour pour jour après les massacres israéliens dans la bande de Gaza, Moubarak allait jusqu’à interdire une commémoration pacifique des internationaux, consistant à déposer sur le Nil des bougies (biodégradables) à la mémoire des martyrs de Gaza.

Le même soir à 19 H, les 300 participants français à la marche se retrouvaient, comme convenu depuis longtemps avec la compagnie de cars AstralEgypt, devant l’ambassade de France, située sur une artère majeure en plein centre du Caire. Juste avant, l’ambassadeur de France, Jean Félix-Paganon, nous recevait dans son bureau, en présence du responsable de la compagnie de cars, qui avait déjà reçu 4100 dollars de notre part, soit 50 % de la facture, pour nous transporter jusqu’à Rafah et en revenir.

Et là, l’ambassadeur nous affirmait en présence de plusieurs témoins qu’il avait l’assurance du gouvernement égyptien que nous pourrions prendre la route en direction de El Arish (40 km avant Rafah), et que nos cars seraient bien présents au RV de 19 H devant l’ambassade, même s’il ne pouvait garantir que nous serions autorisés à entrer dans Gaza.

Ancien contrat en mains + nouvel engagement écrit, en présence de l’ambassadeur, de la part du responsable de la compagnie égyptienne (qui réclamait à cor et à cri le paiement immédiat des 50 % restant à acquitter !), quelques-un d’entre nous partaient chercher les autocars, tandis que le reste du groupe attendait devant l’ambassade.

Après 3 heures d’attente debout, nous apprenions, à 22 H, que les autocars ne viendraient pas nous chercher, et nous occupions alors l’avenue Charles de Gaulle, bloquant la circulation dans toute la capitale en restant assis au milieu de la chaussée, à ce point névralgique d’intense traffic au coeur du Caire.

Une action surprise, rapide, correspondant aux orientations que nous avions décidées en commun, bien avant le départ : réagir de manière déterminée et la plus spectaculaire possible, si nous étions empêchés d’atteindre notre but, et ceci quel que soit l’endroit où nous serions bloqués.

Nous estimions plus probable un blocage par le gouvernement égyptien sur la route, en plein désert, mais ce dernier, comptant sans doute sur le désemparement, et le morcellement des internationaux isolés dans des dizaines d’hôtels différents, en décida autrement.

Erreur fatale pour lui : car les 300 Français se trouvaient regroupés, sans hôtel —puisqu’ils comptaient partir et rouler de nuit—, et très soudés par les rencontres et discussions organisées avant le départ par CAPJPO-EuroPalestine.

Réclamant nos cars et la possibilité de pouvoir nous rendre à Gaza, nous décidions de camper devant l’ambassade de France, déclinant l’offre de l’ambassadeur qui proposait de nous faire conduire au Lycée Français du Caire, et de nous y laisser enfermer sous bonne escorte, jusqu’à notre retour en France (nous conseillant vivement d’anticiper celui-ci, si nous ne souhaitions pas occuper le reste de la semaine à faire du tourisme) .

L’ambassade de France, en liaison avec le Quai d’Orsay, et avec le gouvernement égyptien prit alors quelques mesures de rétorsion à notre égard, limitant l’accès aux toilettes, ne nous permettant pas de recharger quelques téléphones portables au sein de l’ambassade, ni de laisser les plus vulnérables dormir sur sa grande pelouse inoccupée —et payée avec nos impôts.

La sénatrice Alima Boumediene-Thiery, présente à nos côtés, ne s’est pas privée de faire savoir à l’ambassadeur ce qu’elle pensait d’une telle attitude de la part du gouvernement français.

Nous saluons au passage le courage de Monseigneur Gaillot, qui a tenu bon, dormant par terre et vaquant avec le sourire, malgré des problèmes de santé. Un grand coup de chapeau également au doyen de nos participants, Michel Sergent, 82 ans, qui a dormi pendant toute la semaine, en position assise, contre un arbre, et qui a entrainé un groupe de marathoniens tous vêtus des T.Shirts “Palestine Vivra - Boycott Israël” dans les rues du Caire, sous les applaudissements des passants !

Hedy Epstein, 85 ans, rescapée du génocide nazi, qui tentait pour la troisième fois de se rendre à Gaza, est venue le féliciter dans notre mini-blocus de l’ambassade de France la veille du Nouvel An.

Comptant sur la fatigue et les conditions sanitaires déplorables (pas de possibilité de se laver, alors que la pollution était maximale, deux heures d’attente pour accéder à un seul WC pour plusieurs centaines de personnes), le gouvernement français s’est couché devant le gouvernement égyptien, qui obéissait lui-même aux injonctions israéliennes (Netanyahou était d’ailleurs reçu par Moubarak le 29 décembre).

Mauvais calcul, puisque ce durcissement, au lieu d’entamer notre détermination, l’a renforcée. Au point que l’ambassade s’est vu obligée de reculer sur plusieurs fronts, autorisant les gens à sortir pour aller aux toilettes des cafés voisins, faisant installer 4 WC sanisette, renonçant à exiger de voir les passeports français de ceux qui se rendaient aux toilettes, et surtout laissant entrer les délégations d’internationaux de tous pays qui venaient nous rendre visite et nous encourager.

Ce dernier point nous a permis d’établir une coordination très efficace avec les représentants de tous les pays et d’organiser avec eux différentes actions spectaculaires et très unitaires.

Ainsi un rassemblement de protestation, le 31 décembre, réunissait entre 500 et 600 internationaux devant l’endroit le plus fréquenté du Caire (à la fois par les Egyptiens et les touristes), le Musée Egyptien et la place de la Libération, et faisait la une de tous les journaux égyptiens. Le lendemain, un autre rassemblement devant l’ambassade d’Israël au Caire regroupait à nouveau plus de 600 personnes.

Inspirées par notre action devant l’ambassade de France, couverte par les télévisions, radios et journaux du monde entier, les délégations des autres pays ont à leur tour organisé des manifestations devant leur ambassades, avant d’en être délogées.

Pendant une semaine, nous avons réussi, en reproduisant un mini blocus symbolique devant l’ambassade de France, en confectionnant des banderoles visibles de loin,à attirer l’attention des médias jusqu’alors silencieux sur le blocus de Gaza et sur la collaboration honteuse à ce siège de nos gouvernements.

Même les jeunes appelés, massés par centaines devant l’ambassade pour nous empêcher de sortir, pactisaient avec nous et se faisaient constamment rappeler à l’ordre par leurs supérieurs.

Malgré l’action des forces de police égyptiennes qui arrêtaient, embarquaient, intimidaient les journalistes qui cherchaient à nous interviewer, et qui mettaient même des amendes aux automobilistes qui ralentissaient et klaxonnaient pour nous féliciter, le retentissement a été à la hauteur du caractère inédit de telles manifestations dans une dictature qui interdit tout regroupement de plus de 6 personnes.

Au point que les organisateurs américains, un moment tentés par une proposition de Moubarak de sélectionner 80 personnes qui seraient autorisées à se rendre à Gaza, ont finalement décliné cette tentative de division, qui aurait permis au gouvernement égyptien de redorer son blason à peu de frais.

Consultés, nos amis de Gaza, les organisateurs de la Gaza Freedom March, ont vivement conseillé à tous les internationaux de ne pas tomber dans ce piège. Ils ont d’ailleurs accueilli avec la plus grande froideur ceux qui ont malgré tout accepté de monter dans ces deux cars affrétés par Moubarak, et les ont rapidement reconduits hors de la bande de Gaza.

Nous revenons de cette aventure plus déterminés que jamais à mener le combat contre l’inhumanité du siège de Gaza, de l’emprisonnement et de la spoliation de tout le peuple palestinien, par l’occupant israélien. Crimes contre l’humanité qui ne peuvent être perpétrés qu’avec l’assentiment de nos dirigeants, parmi lesquels le gouvernement égyptien qui montre son vrai visage de collabo en construisant un mur destiné à étrangler et affamer davantage encore la population de Gaza.

Des liens très forts ont été tissés entre les représentants de tous les pays durant cette “Marche pour Gaza” stoppée au Caire. Profitons-en pour faire de 2010 l’année qui nous rassemble, pour faire trembler tous ces tyrans !

مسيرة الحرية من أجل غزة : قصة تجربة خالدة

حيث منعت الحكومة المصرية أزيد من 1360 المتظاهرين من مختلف أقطار العالم، ليعلنوا دعمهم لشعب الغزاوي المحاصر، و ليعلنوا رفضهم لسياسة الحصار و التجويع المفروضين على أهالي غزة الباة. وإن السلطات المصرية، و بتعنتها هذا ، خلقت (من غير إرادتها)حملة إشعاعية لدعم الشعب .الفلسطيني من قلب القاهرة

و هذا الستنتاج، هو ما أورده أصدقاؤنا في غزة الذين أبلغونا شكرهم و تهنئتهم على هذه الوقفة، و على وقعها على الصعيد العالمي من أجل رفع الحصار المفروض، و نصرة الشعب المقهور. وهو ما أكده منظمون فلسطينيون من مسيرة التحرير لغزة إن احتجاجاتكم الحافلة بمدينة القاهرة. و ما أحدثت من صخب إعلمي على الصعيد العالمي، هي" " .أقوى دللة و أكثر تأثيرا عندنا من فكرة التظاهر من قطاع غزة

:سرد وقائع التجربة

ما إن وصل وفد المشاركين من فرنسا ( 300 مشارك) إلى القاهرة يوم السبت 26 دجنبر 2009 حتى بلغنا نبأ منع السلطات المصرية وفد منظمي المسيرة من المريكيين من التجمع في اليوم التالي بمركز **** العائلة المقدسة**** .للتنسيق مع حوالي 800 مشارك من مختلف دول العالم، و إبلغهم بآخر التطورات و في اليوم ذاته، تم إبلغ الوفد بأنه لن يسمح لباصات النقل المستأجرة للعبور يوم 28 دجنبر بالمرور، و أنها ألغيت نهائيا. كما بلغنا في وقت لحق أن سلطات مكافحة الشغب تحاصر من حاول العبور من الفراد والمجموعات التي وصلت قبلنا و أنهم ألزموا البقاء على الطريق أو في محطات الحافلت، أو في فنادقهم لمن حالفه الحظ

و في يوم الحد 27 من دجنبر 2009 , بعد عام من ذكرى العدوان الهمجي السرائيلي على قطاع غزة، بلغ المر بالسلطات المصرية حد منع تظاهرة سلمية لحياء هذه الذكرى الليمة. حيث حاول المتظاهرون ايقاد شموع (قابلة للتحلل بيئيا) لحياء ذكرى شهداء غزة، لكن السلطات المصرية أبت .إل أن تإد هذه المبادرة

ومساء اليوم ذاته، اجتمع اعضاء الوفد الفرنسي ( 300 مشارك) كما اتفق عليه سابقا من شركة ***** أمام مقر السفارة الفرنسية الكائن بإحدى الشوارع الرئيسية بالقاهرة. قبلها بقليل كان سفير فرنسا جون فليكس باكانون قد اجتمع بممثلي الوفد الفرنسي، و مدير شركة النقل، و الذي استلم 4100 دولر من ممثلي الوفد الفرنسي. أي ما يبلغ 50 % كم إجمالي المبلغ المتفق عليه لنقل المتظاهرين من و إلى رفح. وأكد سفير فرنسا و بشهادة عديدين سماح السلطات المصرية للوفد الفرنسي بالنطلق تجاه العريش (على بعد 40 كم من رفح)، وأن الحافلت ستكون عند الموعد وإن .لم يكن بإمكانه تأكيد إمكانية العبور إلى قطاع غزة

بناءا على العقد السابق ، و استنادا إلى اللتزام المكتوب, الذي أدلى به مسؤول الشركة المصرية بحضور سفير فرنسا، خرج بعض العضاء للبحث عن الحافلت في حين بقي أعضاء وفدنا في .النتظار أمام مقر السفارة و لم يزل مدير الشركة يطالب بشدة تسديد الجزء الثاني من إجمالي الفاتورة، و هو ما لم يتفق عليه آنفا. ثم بعد 3ساعات من النتظار, علمنا أن الحافلت لن تأتي، مما أثار حفيظتنا. فقام وفدنا بشل حركة السير بشارع شار دو كول. مما خنق حركة السير بالعاصمة المصرية بسبب جلوس .المتظاهرين وسط الشارع، و إقفالهم أحد الطرق الحيوية بقلب العاصمة

كانت هذه إحدى ردود الفعل المفاجئة و السريعة التي أقرها الجمع وفقا لما اتفقنا عليه خلل :الجتماع التحضيري قبل النطلق من فرنسا، و الذي يقضي ب الرد بشكل صارم و شن حملت إشعاعية في حال منعنا من العبور حيثما كنا متواجدين وكنا نتوقع أن توقفنا السلطات المصرية في قلب الصحراء و في معزل عن الناس غير أنها عولت بل شك على تشتت الوفود العالمية المعزولة بالقاهرة و تحركت بشكل مخالف

و كان هذا خطأ فادحا من طرف السلطات المصرية : إذ أن الوفد الفرنسي كان ل يزال مجتمعا (دون فنادق بما أنه رتب للرحيل ليل تجاه غزة) وكان للقاءات التنسيق التي نظمتها ***** أثر هام في وحدة صف الوفد و ثبات موقفه

و استمر اعضاؤ الوفد في المطالبة بوصول الحافلت، مصرين على العبور لقطاع غزة قبل أن يقرروا العتصام أمام مقر السفارة رافضين عرض السفير الفرنسي ، القاضي بنقلنا إلى ثانوية فرنسية بالقاهرة، و تركنا مسجونين هناك مع توفير الحراسة المشددة إلى حين عودتنا إلى فرنسا ! و .ناصحا إيانا بالنشغال بالسياحة خلل السبوع أو تعجيل رحلة العودة لمن ل يريد السياحة

حيال رفض وفدنا لهذا المقترح الهزيل، و بتنسيق مع السلطات المصرية و الخارجية الفرنسية، نهج السفير الفرنسي سياسة لي اليد حيث أقفل المراحيض, و منع تعبئة رصيد الهواتف النقالة بالسفارة، أو حتى السماح لضعفائنا بالنوم على المساحات الشارغة من العشب الخضر (و الذي دفعنا ثمنه ,( !بضرائبنا ******** و لم تختزن النائبة * و التي وقفت إلى جانبنا جهدا من أجل إبلغ السفير تموقفها من سلبيته و من موقف الحكومة الفرنسية

و نحيي صمود السيد **** الذي صبر و ناضل و أبدى ابتسامته رغم ظروفه الصحية، إلى عميد الوفد البالغ من العمر 82 سنة، السيد ******* الذي لم ينم إل جالسا تحت شجرة طوال السبوع، و الذي قال مجموعة من المشاة حاملين قمصانا خضرا تدعو لمقاطعة السلع السرائيلية !بشوارع القاهرة، و تحت تصفيق المارة تحية كبرى إلى **** البالغة من العمر 85 سنة، و الناجية من معسكرات الموت النازية، و التي حاولت للمرة الثالثة دخول القطاع

و للزيادة من شدة الضغط النفسي على وفدنا، أملين أن تتثني عزيمتنا قلة مصالح الصرف الصحي و الحمامات(في أوج التلوث البيئي بالقاهرة، كان من المستحيل بل الممنوع الستحمام، كما أغلقت كافة المراحيض، و تركت دورة مياه واحدة في خدمة المئات ! ساعتان من النتظار !) انحنت الحكومة الفرنسية أمام الحكومة المصرية التي كانت تتلقى أوامرها من صفوف إسرائيلية (جذير بالذكر أن (الرئيس المصري استقبل نتنياهو يوم 29 دجنبر و هنا أيضا أخطأت السلطات المصرية في حساباتها، إذ زادت هذه المضايقات مناضليتا عزما و ثباتا، مما جعل السفارة تتراجع عن بعض التضييقات مثل السماح للمتظاهرين بالخروج إلى حمامات المقاهي المجاورة ( وهو ما كان ممنوعا آنفا) . بل إحضار 4 مراحيض متنقلة و السماح لحاملي باقي جوازات السفر الغير فرنسية من استخدام دورات المياه، كما سمحت لممثلي باقي البعثات العالمية بزيارتنا وهذا أمر مهم جدا، إذ مكننا من التنسيق مع ممثلي باقي البعثات وتنضيم أنشطة إشعاعية مشتركة

و بذلكم تم حشد ما يقرب من 600 متظاهر من الوفود العالمية أمام المكان الكثر نشاطا بالقاهرة و الذي سعرف رواجا كبيرا للسواح و المقيمين : المتحف المصري بساحة الحرية **** مما شغل الصفحات الولى لكافة الصحف المحلية. تلته تظاهرة ل 600 عضو من الوفود العالمية أمام مقر السفارة السرائيلية بالقاهرة

و قد أوحت تظاهرتنا أمام السفارة الفرنسية بالقاهرة فكرة التنديد بهذا المنع أملم سفارات باقي الدول المشاؤكة نظرا لما كان لها من صدى على صعيد العلم المحلي و الدولي، مما حدى بالعديد من الوفود إلى التظاهر بالمثل، قبل أن تجبر على إخلء المواقع

نجح وفدنا في إحلل حصار مصغر أمام السفارة الفرنسية، حاملين لفتات يمكن قراءتها من بعيد لجلب وسائل العلم التي باتت صامتة حيال الحصار المضروب على غزة و التعاون المشين لحكوماتنا مع السلطات السرائيلية و حتى افراد قوات المن التي أحضرت لحصارنا أبدوا تعاطفهم و مساندتهم لنا

و رغم قمع السلطات المصرية للصحفيين الذين حاولوا استجوابنا و اعتقالهم أحيانا، و رغم الغرامات التي فرضتها شرطة المرور على السائقين الذين يخففون السير أو يفتحون منبهات السيارات لدعمنا فلقد كان صيت المسيرة مدويا و مشرفا في دولة تمنع تجمع أكثر من 6 أفراد

و لقد حاولت السلطات الفلسطينية، تطبيقا منها لسياسة فرق تيد، تلميع صورتها أمام الشعب المصري باقتراح مبارك بالسماح ل 80 فردا فقط بالعبور، ولم تبارك الوفود العالمية هذا المقترح السخيف

و بعد تشاورات مع أصدقائنا من غزة، منظمي مسيرة السلم، نصحونا بعدم الوقوع في الفخ و أن ل نركب إحدى تلك الحافلت. و قد استقبلوت ببرودة من كانوا قد قبلوا بهذا التفاق و أخرجوهم من قطاع غزة يكمنكم مشاهدة فيلمين من تصوير مشاركينا بالمسيرة على الموقع ************ إنا و بعد عودتنا من هذه المسيرة لماضون بعزم وطيد لمنتازلة هذا الظلم الإنساني ، هذا الحصار ، على شعب غزة. و عذاب و استنزاف الشعب الفلسطيني العزل من طرف الستعمار السرائيلي. إنها لجرائم حرب ترتكب، و صمت حكامنا يزيدها ضراوة، و منها حكومة مصر التي أبانت عن وجه العمالة والخيانة في وضح النهار ببنائها الجدار العازل لتجويع شعب غزة

لنجعل من هذه الروابط التي جمعتنا مع ممثلي مختلف البعثات العالمية قاعدة انطلق في هذا العام الجديد 2010 لزحزحة الظلم و قهر الطغاة

We wish you a happy new year with many successful struggles against all forms of tyranny, racism, oppression. Our thoughts are with our Palestinian friends, especially in Gaza, more and more strangulated by the israeli occupyer and its Egyptian, American and French lackeys, who have found nothing better to do than building a new iron wall to isolate even more the population in Gaza.And we hear that at this time the humanitarian convoy led by George Galloway and carrying tons of medical products is blocked by 2000 Egyptian policemen n the port of Al Arish.

Underneath is the story of our experience with the Gaza Freedom march, which is not over, but will on the contrary go on and widen in France and elsewhere. The main sanction against Israel will remain the boycott, just as it was done against th South African regime of apartheid. Boycott in all its forms must be maintained as long as Israel will boycott Palestinians. It must be proclaimed proudly because it is the weapon of all those who refuse crual treatments, concentration camps, ghettos where men, women and children are imprisonned to be bombed, starved and humiliated.

Sakina Arnaud, activist against apartheid, againt occupation, and colionalism, is being prosecuted in Bordeaux, for leading boycott actions in a Carrefour supermarket. This supermarket has filed a complaint because she has stamped two stickers in the store. This supermarket regularly cheats on the origin of goods it sells, and Sakina has publicly exposed its frauds (they often label as coming from “Mexico” or “Spain” Carmel and Jaffa products ! ). Carrefour is also a company that hire killers as vigilantes and that will have to account for the death of a minor savagely beaten up in Carrefour Lyon last week. And this company dares sue a human rights activist for two stickers aimed at informing the population on the necessity of boycotting the products of the Israeli occupation !

But this is not all. This lawsuit against Sakina has been requalified by the prosecution i.e. the French governement as a “provocation to racial hatred” due to “discrimination toward a country”, after the intervention ot the French Israeli lobby.

Sakina Arnaud’s trial will take place next week, on January 13rd at 14.00 at the Bordeaux criminal court. This trial is our trial. This is why we are going to express together that we refuse suchmeans of intimidation and we’ll claim that boycotting a state that commits war crimes and crimes against humanity is salutary. Every one must stand up and say “Me too, I boycott”.
We give an appointment in front of the Bordeaux Court ont January 13. We are buying train tickets to go there massively from Paris and other cities. Please contact us if you can come with us.

The Gaza Freedom March : The Story of a Memorable Adventure

We’ve returned to Cairo. The Egyptian government prohibited the 1360 people from around the world to enter Gaza to demonstrate their support for the population and to say NO to the blockade. But by doing that, they drove us to create in the Egyptian capital, a situation which allowed us to support the Palestinian people in an even more spectacular manner.

It was our Gaza Strip friends who quickly drew this conclusion with their messages thanking and congratulating us for our actions, felt around the world, concerning the siege which has been imposed on them and those who carry the heavy responsible for it. The organizers of the Gaza Freedom March affirmed that “The spectacular actions, widely covered by the media, which you are now carrying our in Cairo are much more effective for us than your originally planned visit to the Gaza Strip

The Story:

On our arrival in Cairo, our group of 300 French participants learned that Egyptian officials had forbidden the US organizers of the march to hold a meeting the next day at the College of the Jesuits of the Holly Family, in order to bring together the 800 people from various countries and inform them of the situation. The same day it was announced that the buses which were to be used on the morning of the 28th, would not be there. We also learned that all those who had arrived earlier, and who tried to get to Gaza on their own (alone or in small groups) had been arrested on the way by Egyptian forces, and were blocked in their hotels or bus stations.

And on Sunday, 27 December, one year to the day after the Israeli massacres in the Gaza Strip the Egyptian government went so far as to forbid a peaceful commemoration, consisting of the deposition of candles (biodegradable) on the Nile in memory of the Gaza martyrs.

That same evening at 19h00 the 300 French participants met in the front of the French embassy, situated on a main street in the center of Cairo, according to a long-established plan with the AstralEgypt bus company. Earlier, the French ambassador, Jean Felix-Pagnon, met with us in his office along with the director of the bus company, who had already received from us $4100 or 50% of the cost of transporting us to and from Rafah.

At that point the ambassador confirmed, in front of several witnesses that he had Egyptian government assurance that we could take the road to El Arish, 40 km from Rafah, and that our busses would be indeed meet us at 19h00 in front of the embassy, even if they could not guarantee that we could enter into Gaza.

With the old contract in hand along with a new engagement on the part of the bus company director (who clamored for the immediate payment of the remaining 50%), written in the presence of the ambassador, a few of us left to find the busses, while the rest of the group waited in front of the embassy.

After 3 hours of standing and waiting, we learned, at 22h00 that the buses would not be coming to get us, so we occupied Charles de Gaulle Ave. by sitting in the middle of that nerve center of the intense Cairo traffic, and so blocked circulation traffic throughout the capitol. This was a rapid and surprise action corresponding to the ideas which we had decided well in advance of our depart from Paris: react in a determined manner, and in the most spectacular way possible, if we are prevented from arriving at our goal, and this regardless of where we might find ourselves.

We estimated that the most likely place for a blockade by the Egyptian government against us would be along the route in the middle of the desert. But the government, undoubtedly counting on the disorientation and isolation of people from around the world separated in dozens of hotels around Cairo, decided otherwise. A fatal error: the 300 French participants, solidly bound together by meetings and discussions organized by the CAPJPO-Europalestine, ahead of our leaving, found themselves grouped together without a hotel, because they had counted on driving through the night.

Demanding the return of our busses and the possibility of going to Gaza, we decided to camp out in front of the French embassy, declining the ambassador’s offer to bring us to the French lycée of Cairo, and to keep us there until our return to France (counseling us to do this if we did not wish to spend the rest of the week as tourists).

The French Embassy, connected with the French foreign office, exerted reprisals, limiting access to the toilet, refusing to let us put in charge a few mobile phones inside the embassy, and not allowing to let the most fragile to sleep on its extensive and unused lawns, paid by our taxes.
The French Senator Alima Boumediene-Thiery, who was there by our side, did not hesitate to tell the ambassador what she thought about such a behaviour from the French government.

We take the opportunity to salute the courage of Monseigneur Gaillot who stood fast, sleeping on the pavement and going about with a smile on his face, in spite of his health problems. Let’s lift our hats also to our senior delegate, Michel Sergent, 82, who slept during the whole week in a sitting position with his back to a tree and led a group of marathon runners, wearing the T-shirts” Palestine will live, boycott Israel" on the streets of Cairo, applauded by passersby!

Hedy Epstein, 85, a survivor of the Nazi genocide, who was attempting for the third time to go to Gaza, came to congratulate him inside our mini blockade of the French embassy on New Year’s eve.

Counting on exhaustion and the disastrous sanitary conditions ( washing made impossible, whereas pollution was maximum, a two-hour wait to access the only toilet available for hundreds of persons) , the French governement lying down in front of the Egyptian government, which obeyed the Israeli injonctions (Netanyahu was welcomed by Mubarak on December 29).

Wrong calculation, for this hardening instead of undermining our determination, strengthened it .

Finally the French Embassy had to step back on several fronts, allowing people to go out to use the facilities of the cafés in the neighbourhood, installing 4 portable toilets, giving up on the demand to see the French passports of those who wanted to use the toilets, and letting in delegations of internationals of any country who came to visit and support us.

This last point allowed us to establish an efficient coordination with representatives of other countries and organize with them various spectacular and unitarian actions.

A protest, on December 31, gathered between 500 and 600 internationals across the street from the most frequented place in Cairo, (by Egyptians and tourists), the Egyptian museum and the Liberation square, and made the front page of all the Egyptian papers.

The next day, a protest in front of the Israeli Embassy gathered again more than 600 persons.

Inspired by our action in front of the French Embassy, which had gained full media coverage, the delegations of other countries organized protests in front of their own embassies before being pushed away.

During a week, we managed, with our banners and signs visible fom far away, to attract the interest of the media, which had been up to then most discreet about the siege of Gaza and about the shameful collaboration to this siege of our governments

Even the young drafted soldiers, massed by hundreds to prevent us from leaving, befriended us and were constantly called to order by their officers.

Despite the behaviour of Egyptian police, constantly, stopping, harassing, lifting and intimidating the journalists trying to interview us, even giving tickets to motorists who sounded their horns in solidarity, the impact was up to the the task of such unseen before protests under a dictatorship which forbids any gathering of more than 6 persons.

At the end of the day the American organizers, though tempted for a while by Mubarak’s offer to choose 80 persons who would have been allowed to enter Gaza, finally declined this attempt to divide, which would have enabled the Egyptien government to gain back some credit at little cost.

Consulted, our friends in Gaza, organizers of the Gaza Freedom March, strongly advised all the internationals against falling into this trap. They coldly received those who had accepted to board Mubarak’s buses, and quickly led them out out of the Gaza strip.

We came back from this trip more determined than ever to carry on with th the struggle against the inhumanity of the siege, the emprisonment and spoliation of the Palestinian people by the Israeli occupation. Crimes against humanity which could not be perpetrated without the approval of our leaders, and among them the Egyptian government, showing its true face of collaborator in building a wall meant to smother and starve even more the population of Gaza.

Strong relationships between delegates from all countries were born during this March to Gaza stopped in Cairo. Let’s make of 2010 the year of unity which will make all those tyrants shake in their boots!
