PCHR welcomes Gaza Authorities’ Decision to Grant Amnesties to Persons Accused of Criminal Charges in Relation to the 2006 Palestinian Internal Conflict

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) welcomes the decision of the Gaza authorities to grant amnesties to persons accused of criminal charges related to the incidents that took place during the Palestinian internal conflict between Fatah and Hamas in 2006.

Taher al-Nounou, Spokesperson of the authorities in Gaza, stated in a press release on Sunday, 25 November 2012, following the weekly government meeting that the government decided to “give amnesty to persons accused of charges related to the Palestinian division, and to form a committee to implement the government’s decision and to pave the way to a new era of Palestinian reconciliation.” He also added in various press statements that the government decided to rise above the division out of its belief that it is now imperative to restore the national unity.

PCHR hopes that this decision will push forward the process of the Palestinian reconciliation talks, and that it will mark the end of the division, which has been ongoing for 6 years. PCHR also looks forward to restoring respect and unity of the Palestinian executive, legislative, and judicial institutions.
