PCHR Condemns Incitement Campaign by Right-Wing Israeli Group against UAWC

============================================

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) strongly condemns the incitement campaign waged by extremist right-wing Israeli groups against the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) aiming at libeling and defaming UAWC’s in the occupied Palestinian territory. This campaign is part of a systematic wide-scale offensive launched by extremist right-wing Israeli groups to defame and hurt Palestinian civil society organizations, including PCHR.

Shurat HaDin – Israel Law Center sent letters to a number of international donors that provide financial assistance to UAWC, including a letter sent to World Vision Australia on 15 February 2012, accusing the Palestinian NGO of having ties with “terrorist” groups, and threatening the Australian donor of legal accountability in Australia and the United States if it continues to support to the Palestinian NGO.

Consequently, on 17 February 2012, World Vision Australia suspended financial assistance to UAWC until verifying the Israeli group’s allegations. As such allegations were proved to be false, World Vision resumed assistance to UAWC.

The UAWC is a deep-rooted Palestinian NGO that has a large record of serving the Palestinian society and local development issues. It provides distinguished services to Palestinian farmers that protect them and empower them to be steadfast in the face of settlement activities and land confiscation by Israeli occupation forces and settlers. PCHR has strong work relations with UAWC, and has many joint activities and projects with it, including activities of legal protection for farmers in buffer zones and for fishermen.

The UAWC practices its activities in the occupied Palestinian territory legally, as it is registered as an NGO by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and it is also registered by Israeli occupation authorities in Jerusalem. Such allegations against UAWC constitute deplorable attempts by the Israeli Shurat HaDin to cause damage to the rights of Palestinians and intimidate international parties that believe in the Palestinian rights.
