Thursday 5 July 2007

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign welcomes the TGWU motion 31 on Palestine, passed on 4th July 2007 at their conference in Brighton, in support of Palestinian rights.

The transport and Genreal Workers Union, one of the many national Trade Union affiliates of the PSC, is the UK’s biggest general union, representing over 800,000 workers, and has a long history of campaigning on national and international issues such as ethical trading and fairer workers rights within a global context.

PSC welcomes TGWU’s wish to participate in the lobby of Parliament in November and to provide support to organisations working to highlight the Palestinian situation. The motion rightfully acknowledged that to bring about peace for Palestinians and Israelis “governments like the British Government must stand up for international law and human rights” and must “take a stronger stance in support of the Palestinian people”.

The motion also condemns the violence of the Israeli state towards the Palestinian people and supports PSC’s call for a Boycott of Israeli goods.

PSC campaigns for justice for the Palestinians, and is successfully building a mass solidarity movement with the aim of effecting changes in consciousness, policies and actions at a national and international level.

TGWU Motion - Composite 31

Conference notes that Enough! is a coalition of charities, trade unions, faith and other campaign groups who are committed to peace for Israelis and Palestinians alike. This can only be built on justice, equality and freedom.

In order to achieve this goal governments like the British Government must stand up for international law and human rights.

This conference welcomes the TGWU’s decision to support the Enough! campaign and calls upon conference to mandate the GEC to play a full role by:

1. Actively participate in the events planned throughout 2007 such as the national lobby of parliament in November 2. Build partnerships with other campaigning organisations such as War on Want who are actively supporting the Palestinian people.

This conference deplores the actions of the Israeli government in its treatment and attitude towards the Palestinian people in failing to recognise their legitimate aspiration of a Palestinian state.

We therefore call upon conference to support a boycott of Israeli products and goods and calls upon the government to take a stronger stance in support of the Palestinian people.

We the undersigned urge the Football Association (FA), the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to take appropriate measures to ban the national Israeli football team from all international fixtures until the state of Israel entirely complies with International Law and relevant United Nations resolutions to end Israeli occupation.
