THE STRASBOURG MANIFESTO
From the Manifesto to Action
Sunday 17 October 2004
APPEL
DE STRASBOURG
— THE
STRASBOURG MANIFESTO —
for a just and lasting
peace between Palestinians and Israelis
From
the Manifesto to Action
Strasbourg,
20 June 2004
To
all those who signed the Manifesto :
Following
the initiative of the Strasbourg Jewish-Arab Committee for Peace
joint with 14 Alsatian organisations (ADAC
Athena, AJI- Association Jeunesse Initiatives, ASTE- Association
Solidarité avec les Travailleurs Etrangers, CCFD 67, CCIPPP-
Campagne Civile Internationale pour la Protection du Peuple
Palestinien, Civimed Initiatives, Collectif de voix musulmanes, DIDF-
Fédération des Associations des Travailleurs et des
Jeunes, GUPS- l’Union Générale des Etudiants
Palestiniens, La Forge/ Parti Communiste des Ouvriers de France, LCR
67, Les Verts de la Communauté Urbaine de Strasbourg, Pax
Christi section Strasbourg, Présence musulmane à
Strasbourg), 150 associations, movements, NGOs, political parties,
unions, and more than 300 individuals from 22 countries have signed
to this day l’Appel de Strasbourg/the Strasbourg Manifesto which you
find reproduced here with the list of signatories. It
is still possible to sign it.
On
June 12th, 2004, about 500 people (representing the signatories or
sympathizers) gathered in Strasbourg around Leïla Shahid, the
Palestinian delegate in France, and Michael Warschawski,
French-Israelo writer and activist.
During this meeting and the peaceful march into the city centre
that followed, the participants expressed their determination to
unite their efforts to build up the pressure on international
institutions which, if they want to, have the power to impose the
respect of international law and human rights which are currently
deliberately violated by the State of Israel.
Certain
members of these international institutions can easily be contacted
by any one of us : the members of the European Parliament who have
just been elected or reelected a few days ago. We should all act
swiftly and coherently with respect to these members of Parliament:
thus everyone who has signed the AdS/the Strasbourg Manifesto should
contact as of now the members representing his or her region to urge
them to explicitly take a personal stand with respect to the four
objectives of the Manifesto, which you have signed.
In
order to be as efficient as possible in our action, present and
future, we have to receive your answers, given on the questionnaire
attached to this letter, not later than 7 July. On this date we will
decide, depending on your feedback and in close contact with you,
which concrete action we shall organize together at the European
Parliament in Strasbourg during its first real session, from 13 to 16
September 2004.
You
may find this date of 7 July very early; but, considering the summer
vacations, two months is by no means too long to prepare a serious
action thoroughly.
You
will find enclosed the questionnaire which takes up point by point
the four themes of our Manifesto, which are the basis of our joint
action. You may of course choose other ways to approach your members
of Parliament, giving the politicians more room to express
themselves, or commenting more elaborately on the four items.
Thank
you very much in advance for your solidarious action in this matter.
Our unity creates our strength.
