UN General Assembly opens new chapter for Palestine

Brussels, 29th of November 2012.

Today the UN General Assembly voted to accept Palestine as non-member observer state by an overwhelming majority. Alexandra Thein, Member of the Delegation for the relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council and for the relations with Israel in the European Parliament and Chair of the Advisory board of the German-Arab Association, is delighted with the vote: “Palestinians have moved one step closer to an own state”.

The majority of EU member states voted for the motion, including France, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. European non-EU member states also voted for the bid, including Switzerland and Norway. Thein regrets Germany’s vote: “Unfortunately Germany abstained”. The Council of the EU itself re-emphasized its commitment to the two-state solution in May.

According to UN resolution 181, the so-called UN partition plan for Palestine, an independent Arab state and independent Jewish state were to be created in Palestine no later than the 1st of October 1948. On the 14th of May 1948, Ben Gurion unilaterally announced the founding of the state of Israel, whilst Palestinians have been hoping and waiting for their own state for over 64 years.
