Responding to a statement made on behalf of EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton, on the situation in Gaza in the European Parliament this evening, French GUE/NGL MEP Patrick Le Hyaric said « at this sad time, we need to see the strength of politics prevailing over the force of violence. »
He expressed his hope that lasting peace and a two-state solution could be achieved but said this would not be possible « by treating it as a conflict between equals. As things stand now we have the colonists and the coloniser. »
« If you say that Hamas is the enemy interlocutor, you are undermining the Palestinians who have been trying to enter a process of dialogue for 20 years. » MEP Le Hyaric was critical of the international community and the EU who « had weakened and humiliated the Palestinian authority and allowed Israel act with impunity. Fear is being used as a weapon of policy, » he said.
« They are trying to prevent Palestine from becoming an associate member of the UN. We have to speak in plain terms and contribute to the respect of international law and we could do this by supporting President Abbas’s efforts to achieve international recognition for Palestine at the UN. »
