Gaza Farmers Find Canadian Support
GAZA CITY, Sep 29 2012 (IPS) - “From the coast to eight miles out, the sea is like a desert : it’s sandy and there are no fish.” Mohammed Al-Bakri traces a thick line on the wall map before him, following the lines of Gaza’s eastern and northern borders, continuing south from three miles off the coast. General manager of Gaza’s Union of Agricultural Work Committees, Bakri is well-versed in the woes of the Strip’s fishers and farmers. He explains the insufficient fishing waters Palestinians are limited to, and the consequences of being on the sea at all. “The Israeli navy attacks the fishermen, arrests them and takes their boats, even within three miles,” he says, referring to the three-mile limit the Israeli authorities have unilaterally imposed on Palestinian fishers.

West Bank Village Resists, Week after Week
Mohammed returned to the central square of his village in a small caravan of cars with his friends. Their horns were blaring. This wasn’t a usual night in Nabi Saleh : Half of its 500 inhabitants were already out in the square, surrounding a makeshift stage of lights and speakers. His friends dragged him out of the car and through the crowd, toward the lights. The crowd chanted “Freedom !” and then found their way into a song that declares against the jailer, “I will love the dark.” There was a play already underway, and suddenly it was about him — and, by extension, the nearly three-year-old struggle of his entire village.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli leaders condemned President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks to the UN General Assembly on Thursday, describing the speech as "incitement" and "slander" and against Israel. The Israeli foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, said Friday that "this was a speech of flagrant incitement and a verbal attack. "This speech will make clear to all those who live with illusions and are not honest with themselves what are the true intentions of Abbas and what he is striving to reach." He added : "Instead of thanking Israel for saving the Palestinian Authority from financial and humanitarian collapse just a few days ago, Abbas chose to lie and slander Israel. The Political Transformation of Edward Said, Asad AbuKhalil
Edward Said was a progressive liberal. He was not the radical that he is portrayed to be in Zionist media. But then again, anyone who stands up to Zionism is a radical by Zionist standards. My encounters with Edward Said (and I was not a friend of his and I only saw him a few times and we spoke on the phone a number of times and later exchanged emails – the last one I received from him said that he was “busy writing and dying”) attest to his political transformation over time. I first saw Edward Said at the Institute of Policy Studies in Washington, DC in 1984 ( it might have been 1985).

It Matters Little What Abbas Says, Tariq Shadid
It has not gone unnoticed that Palestinians are showing little interest in Mahmoud Abbas’s speech to the United Nations, which he held on the 27th of September. Most Palestinians have no idea what he said, and do not care to know it. There is quite a contrast between the amount of attention given by Palestinians to this speech, and to the one that he held last year. The explanation for this is really quite simple, especially if the situation is summarized by highlighting a few of its most important aspects.

Palestine and Netanyahu’s bomb chart at the UN
The highlight of Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech as he addressed the 67th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York yesterday was by far and away his cartoon bomb chart.Complete with first, second and final stages (drawn within the outline), each marked a different point in Iran’s progress towards making a nuclear bomb. At some point Netanyahu produced a red marker, drawing a horizontal line near the tip of the bomb, or the final stage just above the 90% line ; this is where the international community should act he told us, estimated to be next spring or summer.
