Allenby Bridge to close early Sunday, Monday
JERICHO (Ma’an) – The Allenby Bridge between the West Bank and Jordan will operate only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday due to Jewish holidays, police running the crossing on the Palestinian side said. A statement by Allenby Bridge police highlights that the crossing usually operates from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, while on Friday and Saturday, it operates only until 10:30 a.m. The statement noted that last week more than 19,000 passengers traveled in both directions. Some 10,229 passengers left the West Bank to Jordan, and 8,729 arrived in the West Bank, it said. Police at the crossing detained 21 fugitives last week over fraud and other criminal charges. Furthermore, 21 patients were allowed to travel in ambulances in both directions.

Egypt still considering free trade zones on Gaza border, says official
The Cabinet is still considering the creation of three free trade zones in Sinai along the Gaza border, said Sinai Development Authority chairman Major General Mohamed Shawky on Friday, contradicting recent reports that the government had rejected the proposal. The zones would be established in Rafah, Nuweiba and Arish, and the Cabinet would make a final decision on the matter in the 2012/13 fiscal year, Shawky added. The Investment Ministry is leading studies to determine the economic feasibility of the project.

General manager of Gaza’s Union of Agricultural Work Committees, Bakri is well-versed in the woes of the Strip’s fishers and farmers. He explains the insufficient fishing waters Palestinians are limited to, and the consequences of being on the sea at all. “The Israeli navy attacks the fishermen, arrests them and takes their boats, even within three miles,” he says, referring to the three-mile limit the Israeli authorities have unilaterally imposed on Palestinian fishers.

Settlers attack rally against land annexation
HEBRON (Ma’an) — Settlers attacked Palestinian demonstrators in the Hebron town of Yatta on Saturday, a local committee official said. Ratib al-Jubour, coordinator of local Hebron committees, told Ma’an that settlers threw rocks at Palestinians and international activists who had rallied to protest the confiscation of land in al-Hamra and al-Kharrouba. Israeli forces were deployed in the area but did not intervene, al-Jubour said. Fadel Jibreel Rabae, 46, and Muhammad Ali Shawahin, 19, were injured in the attack, he added. President Abbas condemned settler violence in a speech to the UN on Thursday.

West Bank Village Resists, Week after Week
Mohammed returned to the central square of his village in a small caravan of cars with his friends. Their horns were blaring. This wasn’t a usual night in Nabi Saleh : Half of its 500 inhabitants were already out in the square, surrounding a makeshift stage of lights and speakers. His friends dragged him out of the car and through the crowd, toward the lights. The crowd chanted “Freedom !” and then found their way into a song that declares against the jailer, “I will love the dark.” There was a play already underway, and suddenly it was about him — and, by extension, the nearly three-year-old struggle of his entire village.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli leaders condemned President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks to the UN General Assembly on Thursday, describing the speech as "incitement" and "slander" and against Israel. The Israeli foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, said Friday that "this was a speech of flagrant incitement and a verbal attack. "This speech will make clear to all those who live with illusions and are not honest with themselves what are the true intentions of Abbas and what he is striving to reach." Minister : PA, Algeria to sign economic agreement
ALGIERS (Ma’an) — The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Economy is working to develop economic ties with Algeria in the public and private sectors, an official said Saturday. A PA delegation, headed by minister of economy Jawad Naji, is due to meet with the Algerian minister of industry and economy in Algiers on Saturday.
Officials will discuss economic ties and are expected to sign an agreement following the meeting, Naji told Ma’an. Algeria has pledged to implement a resolution which will exempt Palestinian products entering Algeria from customs taxes, he added.

Poll : 72 percent plan to vote in October’s local elections
BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A new poll shows 72 percent of Palestinians plan to vote in elections taking place in three weeks, but supporters of Hamas are much less likely to participate in the vote, which is being boycotted by the party. In a poll published on Saturday by the Arab World for Research & Development, 85 percent said they support holding local elections, which will take place on Oct. 20 in the West Bank only. The election is the first time Palestinians will have the opportunity to cast votes since 2006, after Hamas and Fatah split violently a year later.

Jordan names new ambassador to Israel
Jordan has named carrier diplomat Walid Obeidat as a new ambassador to Israel, filling a position that has been vacant since 2010, a senior official said on Friday. "The council of ministers has decided to appoint Walid Obeidat as an ambassador to Israel," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. "No date has been set yet for his departure to Israel." Ali al-Ayed left his post as ambassador to Israel to become information minister in mid-2010 and since then the post has been vacant. The United States has called on Jordan to appoint a new ambassador in Israel, but Amman has been reluctant over what officials said was the Jewish state’s policies towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Egypt and Jordan are the only Arab countries to have made peace with Israel.

The Arab-American community still largely supports President Barack Obama, but 15 percent of Arabs who voted for Obama in 2008 have not declared their support for him this year, according to a new poll released by the Arab American Institute (AAI). 52 percent of all Arab-Americans say they will vote for Obama, compared to 28 percent who have declared their support for Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate.
