AN ARMY THAT HAS A STATE

by Uri Avnery

Friday 24 February 2006

The Palestinian people have elected their representatives. Our government was required to react in a wise and sensible way.

Instead, it’s the army that has reacted. The army published its “evaluation”. The army issued political declarations. The army flooded the media with a deluge of announcements. The army told the cabinet what to do.

The army is an organization devised for war. All its instruments and talents are directed towards war. Its budget and the promotion of its officers depend on the continuation of the conflict. Of all power structures, the army is the least suitable for fixing political objectives.

But in Israel, it’s not the state that has an army. Here, it’s the army that has a state.
