PRESS RELEASE

Video link joins MEPs and Palestinian MPs under expulsion order
Brussels - 21 January 2011

Members of the European Parliament and three Palestinian Legislators under an Israeli expulsion order will be joined via videoconference on Tuesday 25 January from 18:15 to 19:00. The European side of the link will be established at the Voxbox facilities, on the 3rd floor of the Spinelli Building at the European Parliament.

INFORM, a Brussels-based NGO is organizing the video link to bring to light the plight of the Jerusalem MPs who were ordered out of their city by the Israeli occupation authority. The three Parliamentarians have spent over 200 days in sanctuary at the headquarters of the Red Cross in Jerusalem.

INFORM strongly believes that there is no reason for these MPs to be served with expulsion orders for simply being democratically elected to government; and therefore invites journalists to be present at the discussion, they will be able to participate and ask questions to Parliamentarians on both sides of the video link.

Israel’s order to expel the Jerusalemite elected officials from the city where they were born, raised, and elected is in clear violation of international laws and treaties. International law clearly sets the responsibilities of an occupying power towards the population under that occupation. Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states:
“Individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territory to the territory of the Occupying Power or to that of any other country, occupied or not, are prohibited, regardless of their motive.”

A large EU election observation mission monitored the Palestinian elections on 25 January 2006 - videoconference coincides with the 5th anniversary of that election.

The Carter Center was another credible organization that observed the elections and testified to their integrity and fairness, as well as their high turnout (77%).
