Les artistes Palestiniens ont été désolés d’apprendre que vous irez bientôt en Israël participer à un festival du film à Tel Aviv [1], malgré des décennies de politique coloniale et raciste d’Israël contre le peuple indigène de Palestine. Votre visite, particulièrement en ce temps de crimes de guerre accrus à Gaza, ne peut qu’aider les efforts incessants de relations publiques d’Israël pour masquer sa violation continuelle de la loi humanitaire internationale et des droits humains universels. Participer à ce festival, ce n’est pas séparer l’art de la politique, comme s’il pouvait en être ainsi ; c’est plutôt une grossière politisation de l’art, qui le rend complice.

Les Palestiniens attendant d’une personne avec votre passé, votre engagement moral et votre soutien cohérent pour les causes de la justice – de l’Algérie au Vietnam, à la Palestine – de se tenir en solidarité avec nous contre l’occupation et l’Apartheid, de ne pas aider à blanchir les deux, consciemment ou non. Etes vous jamais allé à un festival du film Afrikaner en Afrique du Sud ? Alors pourquoi Israël ?

La participation à un festival à Tel Aviv maintenant ne peut être vue que dans le contexte plus vaste de la célébration par Israël des 60 ans depuis son établissement sur les ruines d’un autre pays, la Palestine. Pour créer cet Etat il y a 60 ans, les forces sionistes ont dépossédé et déraciné plus de 750.000 Palestiniens de leurs foyers et de leurs terres, détruisant plus de 500 de leurs villages, les condamnant à une vie d’exil et de misère.

Israël à 60 ans, c’est un Etat qui nie toujours aux réfugiés Palestiniens leurs droits reconnus par l’ONU, seulement parce qu’ils sont « non-juifs ». Il continue de traiter ses propres citoyens Palestiniens par un racisme institutionnalisé. Il continue d’occuper illégalement les terres palestiniennes et d’autres terres arabes, en violation de nombreuses résolutions de l’ONU. Dans le territoire palestinien occupé, Israël continue la construction de ses colonies et de son Mur massif, en violation de la Quatrième Convention de Genève et de l’avis de la Cour Internationale de Justice de juillet 2004. Il continue de violer grossièrement en permanence la loi internationale et de transgresser les droits humains fondamentaux, avec l’impunité que lui accorde le soutien économique, diplomatique et politique inconditionnel des USA et de l’Europe.

En 2006, les principaux artistes et acteurs culturels Palestiniens ont presque tous appelé à un boycott culturel d’Israël [2]. A ce jour, de nombreux acteurs culturels internationaux, tels Ken Loach et John Berger, et certains syndicats d’artistes, comme l’irlandaise Aosdana, ont entendu l’appel palestinien et banni Israël, comme ils avaient boycotté l’Afrique du Sud à l’époque de l’Apartheid.

Votre visite en Israël ne violerait pas seulement l’appel palestinien au boycott ; elle révèlerait un double standard regrettable, voire une négation de votre engagement énergique passé pour la dignité humaine et la justice. Nous espérons que, même à ce moment tardif, vous prendrez une position courageuse et annulerez votre voyage en Israël.

An Open letter to Jean-Luc Godard from occupied Palestine*

Palestinian artists were devastated to learn that you shall visit Israel soon to participate in a film festival in Tel Aviv [1], despite Israel’s decades-old colonial and racist policies against the indigenous people of Palestine. Your visit, particularly at this time of intensified Israeli war crimes in Gaza, can only help Israel’s incessant public relations efforts in covering up its persistent violation of international humanitarian law and universal human rights. Taking part in this festival is not art separated from politics, as if it can be ; rather, it is a crude politicization of art, allowing it to become complicit.

Palestinians expect someone with your history, moral commitment and consistent support for the causes of justice — from Algeria, to Vietnam, to Palestine — to stand in solidarity with us against occupation and apartheid, not to help whitewash both, whether knowingly or not. Did you ever go to an Afrikaner film festival in apartheid South Africa ? Why Israel, then ?

Participating in a festival in Tel Aviv now can only be seen in the wider context of Israel’s celebrations of 60 years since its establishment over the ruins of another country, Palestine. In the process of creating this state sixty years ago, Zionist forces dispossessed and uprooted more than three quarters of a million Palestinians from their homes and lands, destroying more than 500 of their villages, thereby condemning them to a life of exile and destitution.

Israel at 60 is a state that is still denying Palestinian refugees their UN-sanctioned rights, simply because they are “non-Jews.” It is still treating its own Palestinian citizens with institutionalized racism. It is still illegally occupying Palestinian and other Arab lands, in violation of numerous UN resolutions. In the occupied Palestinian territory, Israel is continuing the construction of its colonies and massive Wall in direct violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention as well as the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice of July 2004. It is still persistently and grossly breaching international law and infringing fundamental human rights with impunity afforded to it through unquestioning US and European economic, diplomatic and political support.

In 2006, virtually all leading Palestinian artists and cultural figures have called for an international cultural boycott of Israel [2]. To date, many prominent international cultural figures, including Ken Loach and John Berger, and some artists’ unions, like the Irish Aosdana, have heeded the Palestinian Call and shunned Israel, just as they had boycotted South Africa during the apartheid era.

Your visit to Israel would not only violate the Palestinian call for boycott ; it would betray a regrettable double standard, if not a negation of your once fierce commitment to human dignity and justice. We hope that, even at this late stage, you will take a courageous stand and cancel your trip to Israel.
