Hello all,

We invite you for the screening of the movie we have been working on for the
last couple of years in Israel-Palestine. The film is about the non-violent
co-struggle of Israelis (Anarchists Against the Wall), Palestinians and
international activists against the wall and occupation in the village
Bil’in in Palestine.

The director Shai Pollak, Wagee and Rani Bournat (two of the main characters)
and cameraman Jonathan Massey will be present and will be conducting a
discussion.

The film was recently shown in the International Film Festival Rotterdam,
where it got the Special Mention prize in the Movies that Matter Award-ceremony.
The film also won the Wolgin Award for Full-length Documentary Film 2006 at the
Jerusalem International Film Festival.

Information about the movie follows first in English, then in Dutch.

Bil’in my love (Bil’in Habibti)

This is a film about how one loses fear of an oppressive army, about the
Palestinian struggle to maintain their land and demand their freedom and
about an Israeli film maker who crosses the line and befriends a Palestinian
village.
Shai Carmeli Pollak did not come to Bil’in as a film maker, but as an
activist to take part in the protest against the land theft caused by the separation
barrier. For a year and a half, he used his camera to document the moments of
despair and hope, danger and courage and the birth of true partnership
between Palestinians and Israelis. During this period, the village has become a
symbol of the joint struggle against the barrier and the occupation.

The director focuses on two central figures : Mohamed, a member of the
village’s local committee against the barrier, and Wagee, a farmer and father of
ten, who is losing the majority of his land to the barrier and to the settlement. The
film exposes the extraordinary relationship formed between the villagers
and a group of Israeli activists, against the backdrop of their struggle. The
conflict that arises between Shai and the soldiers serving in the area is not only
between a director and the subjects he is documenting, but also the conflict
between a former soldier turned peace activist and the entire military
organization.

Een film over hoe men de angst voor een bezettingsleger kwijtraakt, over de
Palestijnse strijd om hun land te behouden en hun vrijheid op te eisen, en
over een Israelische filmmaker die de grens overschrijdt en vriendschap sluit met
een Palestijns dorp. Shai Carmeli Pollak kwam niet naar Bil’in als
filmmaker, maar als activist, om deel te nemen aan het protest tegen de diefstal van
land als gevolg van de scheidingsmuur. Anderhalf jaar lang legde zijn camera de
momenten vast van wanhoop en hoop, van gevaar en moed en van het ontstaan van
echte vriendschap tussen Palestijnen en Israelis. In die periode
groeide het dorp uit tot symbool van de gezamenlijke strijd tegen de muur en de
bezetting.

De regisseur concentreert zich op twee hoofdpersonen : Mohammed, lid van het
lokale comité tegen de muur, en Wagee, boer en vader van tien kinderen, die
zijn land door de muur en de nieuwe vestigingen grotendeels kwijtraakt. De
film toont de ongewone relatie tussen de dorpelingen en een groep Israelische
activisten tegen de achtergrond van hun strijd. Het conflict dat tussen
Shai en de soldaten die in het gebied dienen ontstaat gaat niet alleen over een
filmmaker en de mensen die hij filmt, maar ook over een ex-soldaat die nu
vredesactivist is en de gehele militaire organisatie.

Wordt Israel echt anders belicht ?

Een Leidse universitaire lezingenreeks zonder de Palestijnse kant te presenteren lijkt niet veelbelovend.
Wel symbolisch gelet op de filosofie van het politiek zionisme vanaf Herzl ; immers reeds daarin komen
de Palestijnen, zoals de inboorlingen elders, in het verhaal niet voor.
We weten inmiddels al lang dat de vorming van Israel planmatig gebeurde via de vernietiging van de
bestaande Palestijnse samenleving als wel heel aparte wijze van “inburgering”. Het verzwijgen van dat stuk
geschiedenis zal zeker hebben bijgedragen aan de nogal kritiekloze Israel-houding van Nederland.
Bij bijna 60 jaar Israel – voor de Palestijnen de Nakba, de Catastrofe – en ook bijna 40 jaar bezetting van
Westelijke Jordaanoever (inclusief Oost-Jeruzalem) en Gazastrook zet een Palestina-loze lezingenreeks
echt de verkeerde toon !
Sommige dingen gebeuren in Nederland pas vijftig jaar later, als ze al gebeuren, maar het is nooit te laat.
